Figures in "Sixty-six chain doors" updated to 5 October 2026
A discovery round on 5 October added three shops to the directory — a consignment centre and an antiques shop in Hingham and a consignment furniture store in Burlington — so the figures in "Sixty-six chain doors" have moved: total 573 to 576; independents 506 to 509; North Shore listings 124 to 125; shops with hours 413 to 415; shops with a website 409 to 412. The sentence carrying the first group now reads 5 October 2026. The chain-door count itself is unchanged at 67, and none of the three new shops is a chain. The headline still reads "Sixty-six chain doors" and the slug still reads sixty-nine: both were set when the post was first published and changing a headline is an editorial decision, not a maintenance one. The arguments and the wording are otherwise as first published.
Figures in two columns updated to 28 September 2026, and "as of tonight" replaced with a date
A discovery round on 28 September added two shops to the directory — a fabric thrift shop in Holyoke and a consignment shop in Framingham — so figures in both columns have moved. In "Sixty-six chain doors": total 571 to 573; independents 504 to 506; Metrowest listings 53 to 54; Pioneer Valley listings 63 to 64; shops with a website 407 to 409. The sentence carrying them now reads 28 September 2026. In "The Springfield gap": the six towns' listing count 19 to 20 and their independent count 13 to 14, both moved by the new Holyoke shop. That sentence read "As of tonight", which was true of the night it was written and became false every time the figures were revised; it now carries the date the figures were measured. The counts of what that round itself produced — 22 candidates, 13 published — are unchanged, because they are a record of that day and not a current measurement. The arguments, the wording and the headlines are otherwise as first published.

A discovery round on 21 September added three shops to the directory, so six of the figures the piece cites have moved. Updated: total 568 to 571; independents 501 to 504; North Shore listings 123 to 124; Metrowest listings 52 to 53; shops with hours 410 to 413; shops with a website 405 to 407. One further correction, to our own previous update: when these figures were last revised on 20 September, the sentence carrying them still read "As of 7 September 2026", so the piece attached a 20 September count to a 7 September date. That sentence now reads 21 September, which is the day the figures were measured. The argument, the wording and the headline are otherwise as first published, and the headline therefore still reads sixty-six.

The column cited figures measured on 7 September 2026. A discovery round on 20 September added four shops to the directory and two records had a stale Google Place ID removed, so eight of the figures the piece cites have moved. Updated: total 564 to 568; chain doors 66 to 67; independents 498 to 501; Salvation Army 18 to 19; North Shore listings 122 to 123, of which chain doors 13 to 14; shops with hours 407 to 410; shops with a website 401 to 405. Only the figures changed. The argument, the wording and the headline are as first published, and the headline therefore still reads sixty-six.
Thrift shop listed at All Saints Parish, Haverhill — withdrawn
We listed a thrift shop at All Saints Parish, 120 Bellevue Ave, Haverhill. We could not substantiate it. The parish's own ministries page and its bulletins for 30 August and 6 September 2026 contain no mention of a shop, and the parish lists its food pantry prominently, so it does advertise ministries of this kind when it has them. The only trace we found was a parish social media post from around 2021. The listing has been removed.
Thrift shop listed at Wilbraham United Church — withdrawn
We listed a thrift shop at Wilbraham United Church, 500 Main St, Wilbraham. Four of the church's own weekly bulletins — 16 November 2025 and 21 June, 16 August and 6 September 2026 — contain no mention of a thrift shop, and the current bulletin prints a full day-by-day diary with no shop opening on it. The shop appears to have closed around 2021. The listing has been removed.
St. Mary's Thrift Shop, Dartmouth — hours and address corrected
We carried hours taken from a 2023 news feature. The parish's own weekly bulletin gives Wednesdays 10am to 2pm, Fridays noon to 4pm and Saturdays 10am to 2pm, confirmed in three separate 2026 bulletins. The shop is behind the church at 795 Dartmouth Street; the parish office at 789 is a different address. Both are corrected.
St. Michael's Thrift Shop, Marblehead — address corrected
We gave the church's address, 26 Pleasant Street. The shop is in Davenport House at 24 Pleasant Street, next door. Corrected.
The masthead read EST. 1884
The masthead carried the founding year 1884. This paper was founded in 2026. The date was decoration and was never meant as a claim, but a directory that asks readers to trust its addresses and opening hours should not carry a false date on every page. It now reads EST. 2026.
Ten listings carried placeholder text instead of a description
Ten shops were published with the description "Central/Shore target index." — internal working notes that reached the page by mistake. They have been rewritten from each shop's own name, town and categories. No detail was invented.
The directory said 588 verified locations. It was not 588.
The home page reported "588 verified locations across the Commonwealth". It was not 588 locations. An audit of Google Place IDs — the identifier Google assigns to one business — found 46 of them shared by more than one record. Twenty-nine shops had been entered twice under different name or address formatting and have been merged, losing no data. Two records were carrying an identifier belonging to a different business and have been corrected against Google. Thirty-nine records remain published but are no longer counted as confirmed: thirteen because the house number we hold does not match the one Google returns, ten because no business of that name could be matched, and the rest for related reasons. They stay on the site because each may be a real shop, and removing a real Massachusetts shop to tidy a number would be the worse error. The directory now holds 557 shops, 518 of them confirmed against Google. The word "verified" has been removed from the headline count until every record can carry it.
151 shops carried an "Official Rating" that came from nowhere
Until today, 151 of the directory's listings showed a star rating labelled "Official Rating", a filter let readers set a minimum rating, and the machine-readable feed reported each as "Rating: N out of 5". Every one of those numbers came from the software that first generated this site and had no source: not from Google, not from readers, and not from us. We could not have answered a shop owner who asked where their 3.1 came from. All of them have been removed, along with the filter and the feed line. A shop's standing here now rests on whether it is open and where it is, which we can check, and on signed letters from readers, which a person reads before they run. We should have caught this before the first page went live.
Two Column posts now cite 574 shops, not 570; four parish shops were confirmed through their organisations
On 4 September "Sixty-nine chain doors" and "The Springfield gap" were written against a directory of 570 shops. Overnight the directory grew to 574: four church-run thrift shops (Harwich Port, Rockport, North Attleborough, Pembroke) were published under a second confirmation path — the organisation's own website naming the shop with activity in the last twelve months — because Google lists the church, not the shop. Each of those four store pages says how it was confirmed and links the page we used. The figures in both columns were updated to match, and the posts carry a modified date. The regions changed the same night: the legacy "Western MA" region was folded into Pioneer Valley, and the Spanish edition, which had stored regions under a mix of translated and untranslated names, now uses the same keys as the English one.
Eighteen listings removed after a record-by-record review; the Column now cites 556 shops, not 574
Thirty-eight listings had carried a flag since 4 September because Google's business record for them sat at a different door than the address we published. On 6 September each was checked by hand against the shop's own site, its organisation's pages, the Google record and the trade press. Eight were the same shop listed twice under two spellings of one address (Savers West Roxbury; Mimi's, now La Glam, in East Longmeadow; the ABC Store in Williamstown; Christ Church Thrift Shop in Andover; Goodwill in Brockton; Cohasset Antiques; Nearly New in Middleborough; Duxbury Thrift & Consignment at 48 Depot St) — their addresses now forward to the surviving listing. Three had closed (Chic 2 Chic in Foxborough, 2017; the North Andover Thrift Shop's retail floor, July 2026; This & That in Milford, 2022) and are on the Closed & Gone page. Seven could not be substantiated at any address and are withdrawn: the Salvation Army Family Store listed in Raynham, Mayflower Community Outreach in Plymouth, Gracie's in Winchendon, Treasures & Trinkets in Milford, New 2 U in Newton, Encore Consignments in Billerica and Annie's Book Stop in Brockton. We were wrong to publish them as confirmed. Five of the remaining flagged shops were confirmed today (three against Google's record, two through their churches' own pages); fourteen stay published with the flag shown on their pages. The figures in "Sixty-six chain doors" and "The Springfield gap" were updated the same day.
Nine Greater Lowell shops added and one Pembroke listing retracted; the Column now cites 564 shops, not 556
Lowell has 115,554 residents and had carried a single listing — the widest gap between population and coverage anywhere in the state. A research pass over Lowell, Dracut, Chelmsford, Billerica, Tewksbury and Westford produced sixteen candidates. Each went through the gate every listing passes, confirmed against Google’s business record for that address, and nine were published: the Antique Mall of Lowell, Holy Grail Vintage, RRRecords, Garnick’s Records, Angie’s Corner Thrift Shop, MCH Guatemalan Treasures and lala books in Lowell, and The Wish Project Thrift Shop and Village Consignment in North Chelmsford. Three candidates Google reports permanently closed were not published, one it could not find was not published, and three await a second confirmation. Separately, the Sewing Circle Thrift Shop at 110 Center St in Pembroke has been withdrawn. We published it on 5 September on the strength of the First Church in Pembroke’s own pages, but the newest dated post there is from August 2024 and Google records the business at that address as permanently closed. It now appears on the Closed & Gone page and its address forwards there. The figures in "Sixty-six chain doors" and "The Springfield gap" were updated the same day.
Two shops now confirmed from the organisation that runs them
Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish Thrift Shop, 87 Beacon St, Florence, and Easton Lions Grange Thrift Shop, 192 Washington St, North Easton, were both published without a confirmation label because our rule required the organisation's own page to be dated within twelve months, and neither page is dated. The rule was changed on 7 September 2026: an organisation's own page that names the shop and its street address is confirmation, whether or not it carries a date. Both pages do. Both listings now say who confirmed them and link to the page. The date test could not do its job in any case — a dynamically served page reports itself as modified at the moment we fetch it, which made every such page look current. One column figure moved with this change: the number of listings carrying a website is 401, not 400.
Two shop pages said "Not a Google-listed business". Both shops are listed on Google
From 7 to 13 September 2026 the pages for Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish Thrift Store, 87 Beacon St, Florence, and Easton Lions Grange Thrift Shop, 192 Washington St, North Easton, each carried the sentence "Not a Google-listed business." in both editions. That is not true of either shop. Both have a Google business record. What our own data disputes is which street door that record belongs to, which is why both had been flagged for review rather than removed, and it is a different thing from not being listed at all. The sentence was part of a single block of text shown on every listing confirmed through the organisation that runs it. It was accurate for the five such listings that have no Google record, and it went out unchanged on these two when they were confirmed from their organisations own pages on 7 September. That sentence now appears only where there is genuinely no Google record. Neither listing has changed otherwise: both keep the Google record and the organisation confirmation, because both are true. No other listing carried the claim wrongly.
A wrong Google record on one Framingham listing, a wrong street number on a Sandwich listing, and the Column now cites 577 shops
Three things. First, the listing for ICC Church Thrift Shop, 125 Irving St, Framingham carried a Google Place ID that belongs to a different business: Sister Thrift at 1251 Worcester Rd, Framingham, about a mile and a half away. We confirmed that directly against Google's business record on 19 October 2026. The Place ID has been removed from the ICC listing, which stays in the directory marked as pending confirmation rather than Google-confirmed. Google has no shop record at 125 Irving St, only the church itself, and a church having an address is not evidence that it runs a shop. The listing needs a human check and has not been removed. Second, that wrong Place ID had been suppressing a real shop: Sister Thrift Framingham, 1251 Worcester Rd, could not be added while another listing held its Google record. It is now published and confirmed operational against Google's own record. Third, the listing for Cape Cancer Thrift Shop was published at 131 Route 6A, Sandwich, an address supported by no source we hold. Google's record for the shop gives 124 MA-6A, Sandwich, MA 02563, operational; a Sandwich area listing gives the same door, and the shop's former address in West Barnstable is stale. The address and map coordinates have been corrected. With the Framingham shop added the directory holds 577 shops, and the Column figures citing 576 have been updated to match.
ICC Church Thrift Shop, 125 Irving St, Framingham, is retracted. We cannot show that it exists
This listing has been removed from the directory and its page now redirects to our Closed and gone page. It is the second entry we have filed about this record, and it corrects the first. On 19 October 2026 we published a correction saying the record would stay in the directory marked as pending confirmation and that it had not been removed. That was our position at the time, and it held for three days. Later the same day we tested the record four ways; this retraction publishes the result on 22 October 2026. First, the Google business record this listing cited belonged to Sister Thrift at 1251 Worcester Rd, a different shop a mile and a half away, which we confirmed directly against Google. Second, the only business Google records at 125 Irving St is the host congregation itself, Igreja Evangelica Framingham ICCCHURCH, which is open. A church having an address is not evidence that it runs a shop, and that is the error this paper most wants to avoid. Third, we could find no website for the congregation, and the one church directory page for that address lists two congregations and no shop, so there was nothing for our organisation-confirmation route to confirm against. Fourth, the record entered the directory in an early bulk import that never passed our Google verification gate, and it was the only listing we still published with no Google record, no organisation confirmation and no gate verdict. We are not saying this shop never existed. We are saying we have no evidence that it does, and we should not have published it as Google-confirmed. If the shop is trading, tell us and we will list it properly. One more figure follows from this: our entry of 19 October said the directory holds 577 shops. With this retraction it holds 576, and the Column figures have been set to 576.
Two listings cited a Google business record belonging to a different shop. Both are now confirmed through the organisations that run them
Two shop pages carried a Google business record that was not theirs, and both have been corrected. The listing for St. John's in Beverly Farms cited the record for St John's Episcopal Church at 705 Hale Street. That record is the building, not the shop in its basement. The shop has no Google record of its own, so we have removed the Google reference and confirmed the listing from the parish's own outreach page instead, which names the shop, says where it is, publishes its hours, says it sells gently used goods, and shows parish activity this year. We have also renamed it St. John's Community Shop, which is what the parish calls it. The listing for the Cancer Connection Thrift Shop on Allen Street in Springfield cited the record for the same charity's other shop, at 375 South Street in Northampton, which we list separately. Google has no record for the Springfield branch. We have removed that reference and confirmed the Springfield shop from the charity's own thrift shop page, which lists both branches with their own street addresses and their own telephone numbers. Neither shop's address, hours or details have changed, and both remain listed. What changed is what each page says its evidence is. A listing that cites a Google record should cite its own.
